Today’s Video of the Day is a performance of Joseph Chabanceau de La Barre’s ‘Plus je pense à ma maîtresse’ by French ensemble Les Épopées. The recording can be found on their upcoming album For Happiness in Love. Les Épopées, led by Stéphane Fuget, have joined forces with the vocalists Claire Lefilliâtre (soprano) and Luc Bertin-Hugault (bass baritone) to explore the airs sérieux of Chabanceau de La Barre, who belonged to one of the most prestigious dynasties of 17th-century French musicians.

La Barre's music showcases his innovative use of dance forms in his Airs. ‘Plus je pense à ma maîtresse’ exemplifies this by incorporating structures such as rondeau, chaconne, and passacaglia. These forms, influenced by Italian music, provide a repeatitive harmonic foundation on which La Barre builds expressive melodies.
