The French virtuosso has recently embarked on the challenge of arranging Philip Glass's Piano Etudes for two guitars
Today’s Video of the Day is a performance of Philip Glass’ 'Etude no. 16' by Baptiste Erard and Roxane Elfasci arranged for two guitars. The new single marks the beginning of Elfasci’s project to arrange all of Philip Glass’s piano études for two guitars. 'Etude no.16' offers a glimpse into these reimagining’s which will define Elfasci’s upcoming album, set for release in Spring 2025.
The arrangement shows Elfasci’s approach to bridge the worlds of classical guitar and contemporary minimalism. In Elfasci's arrangements, the French virtuoso strives to incorporate distinctly guitaristic techniques, ensuring that the music resonates as though it were originally composed for the guitar. For instance, the central section of Elfasci’s single ‘Etude No. 16’, characterised by its repeated piano chords, has been reimagined with rasgueados—an expressive strumming technique deeply rooted in flamenco tradition.
