The trombone quartet perform a track from their latest album

A must watch Gramophone video for this Friday is Emily Hall’s Close Palms, written for the trombone quartet Slide Action. The historically oft-comedic glissando is used as an instrument of tension throughout this piece, almost akin to a synthesiser modulation wheel – shifting up and down as the music builds.

Slide Action (Huw Evans, Jamie Tweed, Benny Vernon and Josh Cirtina) release their debut album RE:BUILD on October 11. Slide Action’s aim is to develop music for trombones, and their album features specially commissioned music from British composers. Sitting between these commissions are ‘Interludes’ arranged by Slide Action members to journey the audience from one piece to the next.
