Welcoming a new vocal ensemble with a mission to address the lack of diversity in classical music

Vox Urbane is a brand new vocal ensemble that has been formed with the intention of addressing the lack of diversity in classical music. Co-founders Dan Ludford-Thomas and Helen Meyerhoff both see the ensemble as a way 'to reflect a complex urban tapestry, beginning with a particular focus on gender and ethnic diversity'.

Meyerhoff says, 'I do not come from a family of musicians, I had not even heard of a choral scholarship until it was far too late to apply for one. Yet, in my working life I have been unwittingly perpetuating a system whereby singers like myself might never be discovered, and allowed to flourish. Singing should not be a club exclusive to those from the ‘right’ background. Vox Urbane is my way of changing that.'

Today's video is a performance of Vox Urbane performing Ludford-Thomas's One.

Vox Urbane will be performing a launch concert on April 16 at Asylum Chapel, Peckham. The concert will also feature singers from Vox Next Gen, the ensemble's artist development initiative. Ticket information is available here: eventbrite.com
