Nicolas van Poucke performs the Nocturne in B major in the stark beauty of the iconic venue

For the first Video of the Day of 2024 we take a visit to the magnificant Concertgebouw in Amsterdam with a performance of Chopin's Nocturne in B major Op 32 No 1 by Dutch pianist Nicolas van Poucke. The recording features on brand new album 'Chopin' which releases today.

The term 'nocturne' (French for 'of the night') has never been absolute or indicative of form like the sonata or a fugue, back in the late Classical period it suggested that the work be performed later in the evening. It was Irish composer John Field who created the nocturne for solo piano that was said to be evocative of the night however it was Frédérick Chopin's take on the form that would be enshrined in pianists' repertoire ever since.

'Chopin' is available now and can be heard below via Apple Music.
