Catholic ritual fascinated August Soderman (1832-76). Both works here possess a devotional atmosphere, the setting of Heine’s Pilgrimage to Kevlaar (1859-66) straightforwardly so, but in the Catholic Mass (1874-5, constructed from much earlier material), the composer seems a passive participant, describing the ritual from the inside. The committed mid-1980s performances have transferred very cleanly.'
