Jeffrey Talbot is the possessor of a forwardly produced, Italianate tenor, which he uses with taste and often distinction. He has the range, particularly the high notes to cope with the most taxing pieces in his eclectically chosen programme: the famous high D in the Adam aria is a truer, more forthright note than John Aler's on the recent complete set on EMI (EX270435-3, 2/87); his account of the fiendishly difficult aria from Tancredi presents no problems to him as regards clean fioriture.
On the other hand, he is just as able, in the style of, say, Tagliavini, whom he oftens recalls, to float the Aubade from Le roi d'Ys on a finely poised line or to phrase ''Care selve'' with a McCormack-like care for legato and phrasing. Small things are also well done: Amarilli is poised, notes securely woven together, the Bellini song all sweetness, the plaintive accent well caught. The Denza and Tosti pieces are also done idiomatically.
The record is subtitled ''The Golden Tenor''. Silver is the metal that more readily comes to mind in listening to such refined tone and often delicate artistry. It is to be heard at its most caressing in the Liza Lehmann setting, a welcome revival. Whether the voice is so big as the reverberant recording makes it sound is another matter. Just occasionally it seems to come under strain, as in the Cilea aria's climax, but by and large Talbot's sound training (under Eduardo Asquez, whom I once heard give a remarkable recital in London's Purcell Room), which he expatiates on in his own autobiographical sleeve-note, full of good sense, stands him in good stead. I didn't find the programme very logical with three Welsh songs squeezed in among the more orthodox numbers, and it is a great pity there is only a piano to accompany the arias. Texts and translation would also help. But on this evidence, it does seem odd that Talbot is not singing regularly with one or other of our opera companies.'
