Author: Robert Layton
A pupil of Busoni and of Sibelius’s teachers, Wegelius and Becker, Armas Jarnefelt (1869-1958) also studied with Massenet from whom he acquired his love of Wagner. His music is in the national-romantic tradition and close in idiom to, say, Sibelius’s King Christian II music. The performances by his Swedish orchestra are seviceable, though there is more charm in this music than the conductor has found. Good recording.'
