The Arcadia Quartet, four string players from Romania who studied in Vienna, have been given the top prize in the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition. They take the £10,000 first prize which was awarded to them by an expert panel of judges chaired by the Wigmore Hall's director John Gilhooley. It was secured by a performance of Mendelssohn's A minor String Quartet (they also receive a Wigmore recital and a UK tour). The Arcadia Quartet also took the Beethoven Prize for their performance in the all-Beethoven semi-final.

Second prize (£6000) went to the Polish Meccorre Quartet and third prize (£3000) to the Tesla Quartet from the US.
