If we should need a reminder of how and why the name of Yvonne Printemps rose above any other from the Parisian popular musical theatre between the two World Wars, here it is. Here is a soprano voice of remarkable clarity and purity but one that uses words to tease and seduce irresistibly. If it is already apparent in the opening numbers, from Oscar Strauss's Trois valses, that there is something exaggerated in the way Mlle Printemps holds on to notes long after she decently ought, one is none the less left enraptured by it. Later, in Reynaldo Hahn's Mozart and Oscar Strauss's Mariette, playing opposite her first husband, Sacha Guitry, we note particularly the way in which, as James Agate commented at the time, she ''uses song and speech indifferently switching almost imperceptibly from one to the other''. The laughs, the hushed whispers, the indignation, the excitement are generated in spellbinding fashion. Variety is provided for this generous collection by the inclusion of theatre songs by Poulenc and Auric and backward glances at Messager's Veronigue and Offenbach's La Grande Duchesse de Gerolstein. Delightful music all—but more particularly performances that are quite unique.'
