The first instalment of Melodiya’s Russian Piano School series was the highlight of my last year’s reviewing (8/95), and the sequel runs it pretty close. The cast list duplicates none of the artists from the previous set (except for Ginsburg, who made a token appearance there as duettist with Goldenweiser), but instead offers a mixture of famous names, names famous only among specialist collectors, and names which even specialists might find hard to place. Three or four of the ten discs could quite soberly be described as revelatory, I would say, and elsewhere, even when the playing is ‘merely’ excellent, there is exceptional interest in the personalities and careers involved.
74321 33209-2: A pupil of Pabst and Safonov, Yelena Bekman-Shcherbina initially trained under Nikolay Zverev, in the same hothouse environment as Scriabin and Rachmaninov. She was the first performer of a number of Scriabin’s pieces and went on to record more than 700 works for Soviet radio, making a speciality of Russian salon miniatures, a selection of which she plays here in recordings which were made shortly before her death in 1951 at the age of 69. Nobility and strength of character are the hallmarks of her playing, which elevates most of these pieces from tinkly prettiness to high-class jewellery. Her Rachmaninov is nothing short of sensational; the G major Prelude is as free as a bird, and the E flat minor Etude-tableau passes in a whirlwind 1'34'', pipping even Richter by a few seconds.
74321 33210-2: If that is sensational, what can be said of Grigory Ginsburg’s Liszt transcriptions? They are already well-known to piano buffs, if only by reputation, since the LP versions have long been like gold-dust. From the stable of Goldenweiser, and a long-time colleague of his at the Moscow Conservatoire, Ginsburg possessed a jaw-dropping facility and lightness of touch which recall the piano rolls of Lhevinne and Rosenthal. It’s the kind of playing that sets you wondering if he was equally phenomenal in live performance and whether such playing could perhaps only be achieved on light-touch instruments. Whatever the case, his seemingly spontaneous eloquence and wit, heard at their most breathtaking in his own Barber of Seville transcription, shine through the very shabby sound quality. This is about as ‘must-have’ as a must-have can be for collectors of great piano recordings.
74321 33211-2: The NoNoise remastering on these recordings is a very mixed blessing. I have no idea precisely what filtering process is involved, but in the earlier recordings it seems to give a fuzziness around each attack, making me long for good old-fashioned analogue hiss. Particularly badly affected is Lev Oborin’s disc, although his are in any case not exceptionally distinguished performances. Oborin was winner of the first Chopin Competition in 1927 (Ginsburg came fourth, an honorary mention went to one Dmitri Shostakovich) and he was to become one of Russia’s greatest chamber pianists, a favourite partner of Oistrakh among others. Such a wise and sympathetic guide through the Brahms Op. 119 Pieces (especially No. 3) can justly be hailed as a master musician. However, the Beethoven Op. 110 Sonata is rather strait-laced, suggesting perhaps where Oborin’s pupil Ashkenazy learned his own somewhat formal approach to the classical repertoire. An out-of-tune instrument does not help matters here, but the Chopin and Scriabin sonatas are also disappointingly stiff.
74321 33212-2: Why on earth didn’t Maria Grinberg become better known in the West (she was touring the Eastern block countries in the 1960s, when most of these recordings were made, and came to Holland in 1967 and 1968)? Whether it be the wistful mediterranean harpsichord repertoire of Seixas, Scarlatti and Soler, or improvisatory Mozart, or dreamy Schumann (for whose Bunte Blatter she devises her own very satisfying order) or the intellectual and playful extremes of Brahms, Grinberg identifies unfailingly with the inner world of the music she plays, offering fluency without fetishism, humanity without sentimentality, authority without overbearing force – qualities that remind me of Annie Fischer. The only hint of controversy is her almost funereal tempo for the Brahms A flat Waltz which rounds off the disc. Recording quality is for the most part clear and true.
74321 33213-2: Tatyana Nikolaieva was belatedly celebrated in the West, but this disc shows very plainly that we missed her at her peak. Recorded in 1963, the Prokofiev Eighth Sonata is a staggering account. The recorded sound may be slightly tinny and withdrawn, and the last pages of the outer movements are circumspect by mega-virtuoso standards; but I still have no hesitation in placing this interpretation on a par with the classic Richter reading on DG (9/88). If anything Nikolaieva sees even more clearly into the core of Prokofiev’s soul, laying bare more of the passionate protest which motivates the music. Her own Peter and the Wolf transcription is captivating in its narrative charm; and the Schumann pieces make an attractive opener, even if they are not among his finest inspirations (the well-known F sharp Romance, Op. 28 No. 2, apart).
74321 33214-2: Igor Zhukov is remarkable mainly for his versatility. Some of his Melodiya recordings of mildly esoteric repertoire have appeared in Western LP transfers, but I wasn’t aware that he doubled as harpsichordist, conductor and recording engineer! As with all his compatriots in this series, his playing has a high degree of technical finish, but amidst so much that is inspiring and astonishing his musical solidity seems comparatively unremarkable.
74321 33215-2: It’s difficult to resist drawing parallels between the young Ashkenazy around 1960 and the young Kissin 30 years later – born virtuosos, but with a musical maturity that protected their playing from any suspicion of flash-fingered loutishness. Ashkenazy’s 1960 Chopin Etudes have come and gone on various labels and they are deserving of a permanent place in the catalogue. In isolated instances his phrasing can be a little laboured, in a way that has sadly become more rather than less evident in some of his recent recordings (the first three Etudes of Op. 25 are cases in point); once in a while there is a cautiousness over tempo which suggests making the best of physical limitations (Op. 10 No. 11 really demands a larger hand-span than Ashkenazy’s). But there is still a higher quota of poetic insight and sheer bravura perfection here than in most rival complete recordings, and the First Mephisto Waltz makes a stunning filler.
74321 33216-2: I can vouch for the exceptional pianism of Eliso Virsaladze from having heard her in concert, but by comparison with Ashkenazy her Chopin sounds a bit faceless, and yet again the recording is curiously plasticky; this is not a disc I expect to return to very often.
74321 33217-2: Edvard Syomin’s disc, on the other hand, is going to be a much-played favourite. Now in his early fifties, his career was blighted first by family tragedy, just as he was ready-groomed for competition success, and then by official displeasure (for reasons not fully explained in the CD booklet). He clearly revels in out-of-the-way repertoire. Chopin’s Souvenir de Paganini is so rare it could pass for a clever spoof on the part of the pianist (the theme is the ubiquitous Carnival of Venice, and the cliched figuration to which it is treated verges on the comical). The intense late-romantic miniatures of Alexey Stanchinsky and Oleg Eiges (son of Stanchinsky’s teacher, Konstantin Eiges) are well worth hearing, and Syomin’s playing of the Busoni Carmen Fantasy is nothing short of electrifying. Echoey recording and slightly glassy sound are minor drawbacks.
74321 33218-2: Another remarkable life-story. Yekaterina Ervy-Novitskaya was the winner of the 1968 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels and was enthusiastically endorsed by Rubinstein, Neuhaus and Oistrakh. Then she started a family, moved to Brussels and diverted her artistic energies into teaching, to the disappointment and disbelief of those who had heard her play. She has apparently embarked on a comeback. Her Prokofiev is idiomatic and polished, without, I feel, reaching the starriest heights. There are also one or two nasty jolts – I cannot think what possessed her to halve the tempo for the difficult parts of the first Romeo and Juliet piece, for instance.
All in all that makes four or five urgent recommendations (Ginsburg, Grinberg, Nikolaieva, Syomin, possibly also Bekman-Shcherbina), and in these days of market-saturation that is pretty remarkable. What’s more, I suspect that there are more treasures to emerge from the Russian archives.'
