A quote on the sleeve of this new record, refering to Behren's Brunnhilde, says it all: ''It would have been hard to imagine such a complete union of immaculate singing and deepley involved interpretation''. Having, as I write this, just heard her in the role at Bayreuth, I would heartily endorse that verdict, and it is seconded by her account of the Gotterdammerung Immolation scene here. The frofound understanding she evinces of the text is the epitome of the ewigweibliche concept to which she adheres, and her singing is at one with her interpretation—intense and womanly, not so heroic as some in the past. Totally free of convention, she conveys the emotion and inner core of this great finale, ably assisted by her Bayreuth conductor. Equally impressive is her exalted account of the Liebestod, aristocratically shaped, thrilling at the top of her register.
I was also present at the eraly sessions for this recital. I did not feel then, and I do not feel now, that Behrens is so well suited to Elsa and Elisabeth. ''Dich, teure Halle'' is ecstatic enough, but ''Allmacht'ge Jungrau'' and both Elsa's solos call for a pure tone in the middle register and a steady legato which are not this artist's strengths: hereabouts the breath control is not ideal and the vibrato is inclined to become intrusive. All the same, there is no questioning the sincerity and conviction that are evident, and even more so in Senta's Ballad, though I imagine in the stage performances of the part she has been giving recently the dramatic impetus is even greater. Sieglinde's ''Der Manner Sippe'' is told with vital feeling. There are too few great interpreters about today for this one to be overlooked, even if the chunks here do 'bleed'.
At Munich, Schneider rehearsed the Radio Orchestra with a comprehensive knowledge of the scores, and the evidence of his thorough, unobtrusive rehearsing can be judged here. I would add that the CD is likely to give us rather more definition in the sound than I hear on the present LP.'
