This is not only my first encounter with a CD, but also my introduction to the products of this label. The disc itself was made in Japan by CBS/Sony. The four concertos are those included in the organ works of Bach, but here rejigged by Kurt Redel as concertos for organ and strings, combining Vivaldi's originals with Bach's alterations, and with some newly orchestrated passages. The result is quite delightful, with a very bright string orchestra complementing and contrasting with a late-seventeenth-century organ of 13 stops. My instant reaction is one of exhilaration at the stinging impact of strings and the piquancy of the solo instrument. The listener is drawn into the swirl of sound. Kurt Redel's direction is grippingly firm but there is always the uneasy feeling that Pierre Bardon sometimes wants to wriggle away from it. But for this one thing, his playing is all that could be wished. I will not therefore make a meal of this point, accustomed as we are to soloists bending the tempo at their first entry. Some people may even like it. But in this sort of music I regard the solid driving beat as a sacred force. As for the balance and the quality, I can only say that this is the sort of sound I have dreamed of—and here it is, bright, immediate and unhindered by background noise. I must, however, point out, in the words of a delightful misprint in the booklet that ''the breath which can be heard on the musical tracks and silences is no other than the sound of the belows of the organ''.'
