Here are some old friends, fondly remembered from 78rpm days, and some discoveries (for me, at any rate). If one occasionally smiles at the 'ghastly good taste' of some of the phrasing, particularly from the male singers, one finds much more to admire—the superb diction, for example, and the interpretative thought behind almost every performance. Fortunate, though, the later singers who were accompanied by Gerald Moore—in that department, the revolution he wrought is obvious to hear.
It is a surprise to find Tauber singing Frank Bridge, rather well, too, and sounding slightly more at ease with the idiom than Flagstad does in Love went a-riding,exciting though her performance is. Peter Dawson is well represented by a 1922 Silent Noon (a trifle mannered), a rare Holst song from 1923 and, best of all, a stirring performance of Bax's fine Rann of Exile. M c Cormack sings Bax's The White Peace with marvellous conviction and is in persuasively honeyed form in two Bantock songs, one of them an attractive setting of Blake's poem Love's Secret. Elgar wanted him to sing Gerontius and I wonder if it would have been a good idea. No fewer than five famous interpreters of that role are among the tenors on these records, although only one of them is heard in Elgar—John Coates, whose 1915 In the Dawn tantalizingly suggests how magnificent he must have been—I can understand why Elgar preferred him to Elwes, represented by a rather strained account of Peel's Bredon Hill, also recorded in 1915.
In a Delius group, Dora Labbette, accompanied by Beecham, sounds sweetly fragile. Heddle Nash, third of the Gerontius singers (the others are Tudor Davies and Parry Jones), is pressingly urgent in Love's philosophy, surely a classic performance and a notable example of this stylish tenor's art. Twilight fancies is sung dramatically by the mezzo Leila Megane, on this evidence a considerable performer. Even more impressive is Olga Haley, whose 1918 recording of Bridge's O that it were so has real tension.
Two Cyril Scott songs are winningly sung by an Australian soprano and pupil of Melba, Gertrude Johnson, accompanied by the composer. These are a real discovery. Admirers of George Baker, David Lloyd and Derek Oldham will find good examples of their favourites, but the Norman Allin example is poor and Tudor Davies tends to over-heat a Coleridge-Taylor song. It is instructive to hear Mark Raphael's singing of Quilter though I don't like it much, but I do like Robert Irwin's clear, unaffected and sympathetic performances of Parry, Ireland and Vaughan Williams, while Nash's Linden Lea is a lesson for modern singers in how to turn a phrase to perfection.'
