Described as ''A Handel Celebration'', this pasticcio, with items drawn from no fewer than eight of the operas, was devised for a Dutch television programme. The CD—like the video version, complete with ballet interludes—is taken from the soundtrack, providing in effect a sequence of seven arias, sung with sumptuous tone by Dame Kiri, spiced with instrumental pieces, mostly brief.
Though the plot is broadly based on the situation in Alcina, only one aria is taken from that opera, ''Ombre pallide'', which, preceded by an accompanied recitative, makes up by far the longest item. It is made even longer by Dame Kiri's somewhat languid performance. She is not nearly as animated as Arleen Auger was in Richard Hickox's fine complete recording of the opera for EMI (11/88). Otherwise, even with speeds on the slow side, Dame Kiri sings gloriously, not least in the four Cleopatra arias from Giulio Cesare—including the seduction aria, ''V'adoro pupille''—which provide the cornerstones of the sequence. Not only Dame Kiri's beauty of tone, but her agility, not least in crisp, tight trills, bear switness to her still-formidable technique.
Hogwood, drawing fresh sounds and clear textures from the Academy, follows his soloist very understandingly without trying to enforce his own period-performance style, which would certainly have required faster speeds. Clear, well-balanced sound.'
