Priory Records’ handsome Organ DVD series continues with this third instalment from Cambridge. King’s College’s director of music, Stephen Cleobury, guides us through the 79 stops of this much-enlarged, rebuilt and oft-heard instrument. It is good to be reminded of its capabilities as a solo instrument and not just as an accompanimental accessory to the College Choir. This film (made in May and June 2008) predates the most recent restoration work to the organ (in early 2009).

The filming and sound recording are up to Priory’s excellent standards. Richard Knight’s camerawork captures all the action, despite the cramped console environment, with plenty of interesting shots of the pedalboard. Interior views of the Chapel are well lit, varied and appropriate to the accompanying soundtrack. During Elgar’s Chanson de matin and Thalben- Ball’s Elegy the camera travels further afield across the Backs to Grantchester and the American Cemetery at Madingley.

Cleobury’s playing is measured, smooth and beautifully synchronised with that tricky and cavernous acoustic. Nothing is overblown: flamboyance is eschewed. Instead, we can simply revel in the plummy weightiness of Reger, the beautiful lightness of The Queen of Sheba’s semiquavers and the rolling timelessness of Master Tallis. Murrill’s arrangement of Walton’s Crown Imperial makes a fulsome finale with the tuba stop making its solitary appearance in the recital. One only wishes that Murrill’s own Carillon might have been included too in this centenary year of his birth.

The bonus features are also splendid. I particularly enjoyed Cleobury’s explanation of his approach to registration in each piece.
