Rationing its supply of the traditionally most popular anthems, this volume has Bullock's Give us the wings of faith and Wood's O Thou, the central orb. Recent trends suggest that Harvey's I love the Lord is to be added to the list: the reiterated chord and text make their mark upon even the least musical of listeners, and the ''classic bitonality'' (as the booklet-note has it) may attract the modernist and mystic. Certainly it is turning up with impressive regularity on record, this being the most dramatic of the recorded performances to date. The collection also goes back, if only briefly, to the early nineteenth century (or very late eighteenth) with Attwood's Come, Holy Ghost, graceful in its simplicity. The Stanford-Parry axis is represented by the middle and least often heard of Stanford's three unaccompanied motets, and by the long anthem Parry wrote for the Salisbury Diocesan Festival with the famous hymn ''O praise ye the Lord'' in its final section. William Mathias's familiar recipe of syncopations, added discord notes and melodies that come as near as a respectable modern composer dare to satisfy the 'give-us-a-tune' brigade is well sampled in his anthem for the ill-fated Royal wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spenser. Francis Grier gives the trebles something to think about, Francis Jackson having put them in training earlier on in the programme. There are also other, beautifully crafted compositions, by Bairstow, Howells and Harris.
The choir sing with their customary splendour and assurance. Andrew Lucas again plays with skill, and John Scott's direction secures a sense of spirited enthusiasm along with care for detail (including a knowledge of how to make the echo work for the music). The booklet is again a pleasure to use: William McVicker contributes informative notes accompanied by clear texts and a portrait or photograph of each composer (including an endearingly fuzzy snap of Sir William Harris). Best of all, they are all in one place, and you don't spend your time turning backwards and forwards.'
