The CD of Decca's Tchaikovsky/Dohnanyi coupling displays a subtle but distinct gain in tangibility and focus compared with the LP. However, in the Tchaikovsky the backward balance of the piano is the more apparent, so that after the bold opening of the horns the soloist makes less impact. But the sound itself is beautiful and natural (especially the strings, which are warm and full) and, of course, with the silent background the pianopianissimo in the pizzicato strings at the opening of the Andantino is very telling. The wide range of dynamic also means that the climax in the finale, before the final statement of the big theme, is spine-tingling. Also, the ear notices that Solti's orchestral vehemence at the opening of the Dohnanyi has a touch of aggressiveness, almost going over the top in its characterization. That said, there is much to enjoy in both works, the Dohnanyi has many touches of engaging detail, and those who like a not too flamboyant approach to the B flat minor Concerto will find that Schiff remains very communicative.
I should add that when reviewing the LP, I did say that Schiff in no way displaces Argerich on DG as first choice in the Tchaikovsky and that Pogorelich (also DG) is much more dramatic.'
