Author: Ivan March
This reissue is valuable in including the only available recording of the Op. 66 Scenes historiques, which are, as it happens, among the most attractive performances here. But all the music-making is positive and committed and as usual Gibson displays his special sympathy for the music's colour and atmosphere. Under Karajan (say) there might be more sheer drama, but many Sibelians will respond to Gibson's occasional reticence, and the Scottish orchestra play with eloquence and sympathy. As in the rest of this series (reviewed above) the over-all balance gives a convincing impression of realistic orchestral layout, with good detail.'
