Author: Ivan March
The most impressive performances are The swan of Tuonela (with lovely cor anglais playing) and the splendid Pohjola's daughter: here Rozhdestvensky's reading seems even more magnetic than on the LP Finlandia goes well enough, but I still find a lack of spontaneity in Karelia. The CD marginally sharpens focus and detail and emphasizes the excellence of Christopher Parker's balance, though one is now made more aware that this is a studio ambience rather than a concert hall (not necessarily a disadvantage).'
