The collective title ''Serenade'', catches well the flavour of the music—light, gentle, undemanding. The general flavour is shown at its best, really, by the occasional excursion into the lively: the Bulgarian Wedding Dance by James Moody, the Norwegian Dance of Grieg and the two Beatles tunes are among the best of them. Also, of course by the outer movements of the Handel sonata. These three movements are chosen from the body of flute sonatas, with very agreeable realizations of the keyboard part by, again, James Moody, who contributes a lot to the record. Is this the same James Moody who once, an unimaginably long time ago, regularly enlivened sound radio with stylish jazz piano playing?
Of course there are other contributions, too: George Martin, producer of many of Reilly's early records, also gives us an agreeable Adagietto and some effective arrangements; David Reilly, son of Tommy, wrote Aviator, a gentle piece whose connection with its title escapes me completely, Gordon Langford a couple of classical arrangements, and Tommy Reilly himself a short, unaccompanied Serenade, which no doubt gives its title to the disc.
But of course Reilly's major contribution, in which the no doubt recalcitrant harmonica is made to work wonders, is in the miraculous solo performances. The same quality is evident in the string accompaniment, wavering between eight and nine strings drawn from the Academy of St Martin in the Fields: better than this you cannot do.
The quality of recording (I have only been able to hear the tape version) is excellent. So are the informative sleeve-notes by, again, David Reilly but I wish his information had been printed in the same order as the performances on the record!'
