Author: John Warrack
Schumann's Requiem only intermittently lives up to the promise of its beautiful dark D flat opening, but it should certainly be in the catalogue; and this version of some ten years ago comes up well enough on CD. The performance is good, apart from occasional uncertainty among the tenors, and the soloists are, if not of the greatest distinction, at one with the music and each other. Miklos Forrai conducts a well-considered performance of this and of the Requiem fur Mignon, an odd, touching piece that it is also good to see back in the catalogues. The recording is fair, perfectly acceptable in the circumstances.'
