This is a highly professional Trout, and unlike many (though not all) rival teams the Nash also offer a beguiling extra, i.e. the Notturno in E flat thought to be a rejected slow movement for Schubert's First Piano Trio. But that said, collectors should remember that CD competition in the Trout is hot and strong, not least from the irresistibly spontaneous young Schiff and the Hagen Quartet (Decca), the vivid, urgent Brendel and the Cleveland Quartet (Philips), and Curzon and his Viennese colleagues (Decca, mid price), whose smiling charm carries a touch of the vernacular. In comparison the Nash, with their no-nonsense phrasing and briskish tempo for the faster movements (as also the concluding Allegretto variation in the fourth movement) emerge just a little too impersonal for my own taste. But their ensemble cannot be faulted, and I think I'm right in saying that their performance stands alone in bringing the few small textual differences of the Urtext edition (like the somewhat naive accompaniment in the first variation of the fourth movement). The CD transfer does better for the strings than the piano, which I thought a little boxy, or should I say, less natural than it should be.'
