EMI, although late-comers to the CD arena, are going to be more than welcome if they give us recordings of this standard.
The Schubert String Quintet is a deservedly popular work and as such has been frequently recorded. This recent version found favour with RF when he reviewed the LP and no wonder, for as a CD it greatly pleases me. The recorded quality is quite excellent with each instrument firmly in its place and utterly lifelike in realism and dynamic. One cello is slightly more prominent than the otherand has a guttier sound (one might guess this to be the quartet's 'visitor'). The chosen acoustic is just sufficiently alive to give the players' enthusiastic but beautifully controlled performance viable depth and dimension.
This is a most desirable disc, one which is so civilized and timeless that it invites repetition, and one which you will certainly wish to play to your friends as an example of the truth in music which CD can provide.'
