Lindsay Quartet
The sound ASV have provided for the Lindsay Quartet on CD is still not very ingratiating, but the somewhat metallic aura present on the LP is no longer in evidence, and as a result the performance of the Death and the Maiden's first movement in particular is made to seem a little less aggressive than before. EMI's engineers have provided a slightly better recording for the Alban Berg Quartet, though it is not ideally comfortable, and their disc includes a whole extra quartet, the Rosamunde, D804, instead of just the short quartet movement. But their playing is a little dry and uninvolved, sometimes also a little strenuous. On DG the Amadeus Quartet enjoy the best recording and their performances have a little more warmth than those of the other two ensembles—but they also show less technical security. The Lindsays are alone in playing the Death and the Maiden's first-movement repeat; their highly charged, intensely committed approach to the music is impressive and their CD is the one to have, I feel.'
