Author: Tim Parry
Goldstone and Clemmow are as lively and engaging as in previous volumes. They make an especially strong case for the early Fantasie, D1, but despite some felicitous touches they don't match Barenboim and Lupu in the A flat major Variations, D813 (Teldec, 8/97). Sometimes I felt their fortes growl too aggressively, but their tone is attractive in softer passages and there are no problems with ensemble and balance. The recordings are closely miked but clear and immediate, although there is the occasional dodgy edit (e.g. track 4 at 1'22'').
