A fellow German-immigrant friend of Handel’s, Pepusch is perhaps best-known for his contribution to the Beggar’s Opera. Bergen Baroque explores his accomplished if small-scale cantatas for soprano, obbligato recorder and continuo in honest, tidy and often charming performances. The singing is limited in expressive range and the recorder/traverso playing prone to exasperating micro-gestures, but Pepusch still emerges as a better than ordinary figure in eighteenth-century English musical life.'
