A new recording of the Concierto de Aranjuez needs something special if it is to stand out clearly from the abundant others. Here a point is made that all the performers are Spanish. This is not the first such recording – that by Narciso Yepes with the Spanish Radio and TV Orchestra predates it by some decades. The present one has the advantage of enhanced recording technique, and the performance (also that of the Fantasía para un gentilhombre) is very good, albeit somewhat low-key where ‘Spanish fire’ is concerned, but I detect no greater element of ‘Spanishness’ than in many others – nothing to call for a headlong rush to the shop to buy it.
Música para un jardín is a short four-seasonal compilation of Berceuses to which Rodrigo added framing movements when orchestrating it in response to a commission to write music for film. It is, in a word, charming. There is also an excellent recording by Bátiz and the LSO. The only novelty here is the Tres viejos aires de danza (1929), fitly conservative and pleasant evocations of times gone by. The Pastorale is an orchestration of the original piano piece of 1926.
The recording is commendably clear and the annotation is worthily informative, but your reception of this disc will depend on your own policy in building an archive of the music of Rodrigo.
