The refulgence of Jessye Norman's tone and ehr well-known conviction singing make her an almost ideal interpreter of such songs as Wie sollten wir geheim and Heimliche Aufforderung, which benefit from her ebullient, involving style. She brings the same kind of enthusiastic response and also a care over dynamics to lesser-known pieces such as Lob des Leidens and the recently discovered Malven, Strauss's last song, here given a more engaging performance than that by Eva Marton (CBS IM42019, 4/85).
Elsewhere I am less happy with the interpretations. Strauss made clear on the records where he accompanied singers that he wanted his songs to go at a prompt pace. I have been studying closely accounts of several of his most popular songs lately. Allerseelen, in most performances, takes some 2'40''; Norman needs almost a minute longer, which leads to a gluey, almost sentimental reading of a song already full of enough sentiment. Strauss's version of Die Nacht lasts about 2'20''; here it takes almost three minutes and, again, the effect is to exaggerate the feeling of a simple piece. On the other hand, she speeds through the famous Standchen more quickly than any other singer I have come across, making it sound almost hectic. Now tempo isn't of the essence if the artist convinces you that her way is right, but here I become worried by the extremes, which seem a shade unnatural. For quite another reason, going over the top, I found Norman's Schlechtes Wetter unfortunate.
But perhaps I am making too much of the eccentricities. There is a great deal to enjoy here, not least Stiller Gang heard in its original version with viola obbligato and a beautifully shaped Traum durch die Dammerung, where—as often elsewhere in this recital—the singer captures unerringly the mood of a song. Geoffrey Parsons easily encompasses Strauss's often tricky piano parts. The recording is truthful, but CD may avoid the occasional moments of overloading.'
