Fournier had previously set down the main work with Krauss and Szell, and his subtle and noble playing was well caught on this first of three Karajan recordings. The orchestra is set well back in a resonant acoustic. Those who admire the more robust Strauss of Fritz Reiner may find Karajan’s interpretation somewhat aloof however. An odd coupling too: the concerto is confident and lush, but not very combustible.'
