Aware that the fruits of a collaboration of Simon Preston and the choir of Christ Church, Oxford, with Trevor Pinnock's English Concert will never lose their flavour, Archiv have chosen to remaster selections from their 1980 recording and release them on CD. The result is very pleasing. The Te Deum, the Jubilate and the anthem My heart is inditing are spaciously paced—at tempos appropriate to live cathedral acoustics; the remaining three anthems seem rather less self-conscious: There is some very expressive singing by Matthew Bright (particularly in the Te Deum) and David Thomas (notably in They that go down to the sea in ships).
The nameless solo choristers contribute innumerable duos, solos and points of imitation with grace and beauty, The English Concert take pleasure in the undemanding symphonies and accompaniments—providing sweetness and piquancy where needed. Purcell's masterful word-painting and glorious dissonance are well served throughout.'
