I have not ticked them off from number 1 to 150, but the psalms of David as presented in this valuable series cannot be far from completion. When it comes to the final survey, this volume by Ely Cathedral should stand high: others have been more ingenious and elaborate, some (including the very first, the volume by Hereford Cathedral) have been at least as expressive, but the contribution from Ely has one quality in which the series as a whole has not been rich, and that is... not a very holy word, I'm afraid, but the best I can find for it... meatiness. They are not ashamed of, or diffident about, producing a good solid forte. There are more refined (and essential) attributes too: clear articulation, intelligent weighting of syllables, obedient variation of volume, and so forth. But among the choirs we have heard, they come nearest to providing the splendour we look for in ourcathedrals (and even in the psalms).
Certainly some of the most colourful fall to their share. The eagle and the pelican, the he-goat out of the folds and the cattle upon a thousand hills are all here; the purging with hyssop, the ointment that ran down Aaron's beard ''and went down to the skirts of his clothing''; the heaviness that may endure for a night and the joy that cometh in the morning. To this volume too fall some of the psalmist's more vindictive utterances (Psalm 52, ''Why boastest thou thyself, thou tyrant'' doesn't mince words), and to its credit the choir denounces with conviction. Psalm 120 is particularly good in its very different mood, with supple pointing and a chant with more harmonic interest than usual. David Price colours and varies the accompaniments judiciously, the choir's blend is good (though with an occasional protruberance of bass), and Stephen Shipley, the Precentor, adds useful notes for the leaflet.'
