Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra Mariss Jansons, Conductor Sergey Prokofiev, Composer |
Author: Robert Layton
Hearing this recording in its CD format I can report that my original enthusiasm was not misplaced. There is nothing 'spectacular' about the sound: the listener is well placed in the auditorium, yet there is an abundant sense of presence. Indeed, so natural is the aural image that after only a few bars one forgets about the sound altogether. As I said in January, the playing is pretty high voltage with firm, rich string tone, particularly from the lower strings and distinctive wind tone. Jansons's brisk tempos worried me less this time round, except in the slow movement which lacks breadth and, in the closing measures, poetry. An exhilarating and exciting performance, which must carry a very strong recommendation Even if you have the Previn (Philips), the Jarvi (Chandos) or such classics as the Karajan (DG) or Koussevitzky (RCA—nla), you should make an effort to hear this.'
