Author: Robert Layton
In its LP format, Chandos accommodated the densely-written Second Symphony on one side, and although the recording had no lack of detail and body, it was naturally cut at a fairly low level. In its CD format this ciritcism does not apply—there is much greater range and body than on the LP, and as usual from this source the balance is agreeably natural. The excellent account of the Sixth has won a Gramophone Award as the best orchestral record of 1985 and this successor is only marginally less impressive.'
