Author: Andrew Achenbach
An entertaining compendium, stylishly delivered and devoted to music penned over a 16-month period (July 1931 to November 1932) during Martinu’s lengthy Paris sojourn. Stand-out items include the concise Second Violin Sonata (whose outer movements exhibit more than a whiff of the composer’s teacher, Albert Roussel) and substantial, Coolidge Medal-winning String Sextet. Some occasionally acerbic string timbre notwithstanding, the recording is clean and true.'
