Stand-out items include the concise Second Violin Sonata (whose outer movements exhibit more than a whiff of the composer’s teacher, Albert Roussel) and substantial, Coolidge Medal-winning String Sextet. Some occasionally acerbic string timbre notwithstanding, the recording is clean and true.'
