These ''Organ Fireworks'' discs are mining a rich seam of repertoire ranging from the sublime (Mozart's Fantasia) to the ridiculous (Lefebure-Wely's Marche), from the obscure (Slogedal's Variations) to the familiar (Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance). All have in common a virtuosity, be it simple showiness or something of greater musical substance, which, articulated by such an able player as Christopher Herrick and on an organ the mere sound of which can send shivers down the spine, means that we are treated to a thoroughly satisfying, carefully balanced display of aural pyrotechnics cleverly tailor-made for each particular setting: composers from Norway, Sweden, Denmark and, of course, Finland give this fifth ''Fireworks'' disc a truly Scandinavian flavour.
Breathtaking clarity and an almost electrically charged brilliance of tone are the hallmarks of this magnificent Finnish organ. Its most remarkable feature is a 'floating' Trompeteria manual boasting four dazzling reeds, which tear around the speakers like loose high-tension cables. Never has Finlandia sounded quite so thrilling as it does with these flashing trumpets; never has Mulet's evergreen Carillon-sortie crackled as it does in this cold, clear Northern atmosphere. It gives a wonderful radiance to those less overtly flashy pieces and, combined with Herrick's intuitive musicianship, we have here performances of the Mozart Orgelstuck, and Nielsen's mammoth Commotio, of great stature.
I would have thought that a certain degree of exhaustion from the ''Organ Fireworks'' team could have been expected after their previous four magnificent projects, but here is another splendid disc as thrilling and truly spectacular as anything they, or anyone else for that matter, have so far produced.'
