One of the advantages of reading The Times is to be able to note, week by week, the generous provision of a Sunday evening organ recital in Westminster Abbey. The fact that not everyone can attend is neither here nor there. Anyone who has heard the Abbey organ must feel a certain glow to know that it is being unleashed in all its radiance, as a solo turn. Christopher Herrick, the sub-organist, has had many years experience now of providing that royal lift to the spirit which sends people to Westminster to hear him. He has made a number of fine recordings too, but none so true to the atmosphere of that great church as this one is. The organ, rebuilt last year, has acquired even more nobility, and its eagerness to see the congregation cheerfully off the premises has never been better displayed. The Abbey organ also has its own way of retreating from jubilation to a sombre plane which says ''but seriously . . .''. It knows how to produce a hush, like Stuart Hibberd. Some of these brilliants are new to me. The one I must adopt is the Brewer Marche heroique. Herrick played it at Lord Mountbatten's funeral service. His playing of this joyous programme has thee mastery and security of a man who knows his instrument thoroughly and who enjoys the popular demand for ''Organ Fireworks'' (the title of this record). Every organ addict will need to possess so fine a product.'
