This Offenbach triple bill presents three different sides of the composer. The charming three-character domestic comedy Pomme d'api is a late work with some especially rewarding soprano solos. M. Choufleuri is a more typically zany piece of Offenbach with operatic parodies provoked by the need to impersonate the singers Sontag, Rubini and Tamburini to avoid the host of a soiree losing face before his guests. Mesdames de la Halle is a work written on a larger scale, with a full chorus and a group of female market vendors sung by men. It hardly needs saying that there are attractively piquant melodies throughout.
Mady Mesple, if a little squeaky at the top of the voice, is generally accomplished and agile in the three soprano roles. What really makes the recording, though, is the excellent team of male singers who are so much at home in this repertoire. The humour of the pieces is all there, though the importance of the dialogue means that English listeners will probably need to make good use of the libretto. The recording is well balanced and clear, and the results are altogether delicious. But am I being ungenerous in wishing that EMI had packaged these works a CD apiece rather than splittingM. Choufleuri across discs?'
