This was the Philips engineers' first-published digital recording back in 1981, and the CD with its firmness and body makes one appreciate what was missing on the original disappointing LP. Even so, this new CD has nothing like the breadth and brilliance of Maazel's Telarc version (coupled as above), nor the presence and bloom of Abbado's DG (coupled with Ravel's La valse), but the disappointment is now more a question of Davis's recessive interpretation—safe and even tame rather than brilliant, often at speeds slower than usual.'
