Author:
Rather like an effective insect repellant, CD fidelity clears the air of all those tiny surface noises that blemish this issue in its LP format, and comes reasonably close to capturing the huge resonant ambience of King's College Chapel. I still feel that more use could have been made of this space for the recording of Allegri's Miserere, in which the solo choir—the one that includes the high treble part—is place uncomfortably close to the listener; a little extra distance would have produced a more magical result. Here and in several of the shorter pieces, the performances are noble if a little plain. For some genuine mark of inspiration, however, listen to the subtle, musical performance of Frescobaldi's Messa sopra l'aria della Monica, which more than compensates for any earlier disappointment.'
