You may be tempted by the inclusion of a fill-up on the new CD. The rivals offer only the Trout Quintet; Eine kleine Nachtmusik falls freshly on the ear played by single strings. Intonation is not always quite steady, notably in the second movement; it is probably the recording that is at fault rather than the players.
In the Trout, Emanuel Ax shows he is capable of a pleasing delicacy; the whole group can reduce effectively to a true pianissimo. As on the other discs the piano is inclined to dominate too much, but this is a difficult work to balance and a goodish job has been made of the recording. Ax is a less personable pianist than either Brendel (Philips) or Schiff (Decca), both of whom I am inclined to prefer. Brendel is his magnificent self, marvellously strong in the Scherzo, though I think he slows down a shade too much for the Trio. Schiff, always trying to emphasize the poetry, slows down even more and for my taste he changes the tempo too often, especially in the first movement (where no change is called for). But he plays with great charm and always holds the interest, and he is supported by some fine string players. But I would put the Brendel disc at the top; he and the Cleveland Quartet give a superb account of this always responsive music.'
