Both these performances have been issued on CD before (on 410 197-2OH, 6/84, and 411 658-2OHM, 11/84 respectively); I presume the present reissue is motivated by the recent popularity of this particular coupling and the desirability of having a period-instrument alternative to the several versions available on modern instruments. Well and good: though it has to be said that these works do not show the Academy of Ancient Music at their best. The playing itself serves well enough; ensemble is good, intonation pretty reliable. But I think most readers will find the interpretations decidedly bland. Don't look for tragedy in the G minor or majesty in the Jupiter, or even much characterization of the ideas. Such revelations as there are are confined to inner details of the orchestral texture, which as always are well served by these players and here are enhanced by CD clarity.'
