Author:
Eloquent soloists and delightfully pointed contributions from all members of the ECO under Sir Alexander Gibson's direction bring us highly desirable recordings of two Mozart concertante works—the first and last of his multiple-soloist concertos. The more familiar Sinfonia Concertante finds those two stalwarts of the Amadeus Quartet—Norbert Brainin and Peter Schidlof—lavishing a lifetime's insight and feeling into this inspired work, with poetry and sprightliness in all the right places. For the early Concertone in C, Peter Schidlof changes his viola for a violin and the two are joined by the oboe and cello soloists. Although the recording has considerable accoustic warmth, the numerous musical strands can be easily distinguished—indeed, the extra clarity and more explicit stereo spread of the CD tends to emphasize the forwardness and separation of the two violins in particular.'
