Author:
Expect to be surprised by the imaginative touches in this recording of three Mozart serenades. The CD begins with the very familiar Eine kleine Nachtmusik, but it comes as a shock to hear it played with only one string player per part, and the bass emphasized by cello and double-bass doubling. If you survive the shock, then you will undoubtedly be captivated by the verve and freshness of the playing. Next comes the Notturno for four orchestras, K286, so cleverly spaced out (and distanced) as to underline the work's unique dimensions of counterpoint. It might be an idea to borrow a score from your library to identify the left, right, middle distance and remote groups of players. Finally, in the Serenata notturna K239, we have an orchestra of strings and timpani with a concertino group of two violins, viola and double-bass floating ethereally in front of them. Playing and recording are first rate: a CD without a single dull moment in it.'
