The first volume of Jean-Efflam Bavouzet’s collaboration with Gábor Takács-Nagy conducting the Manchester Camerata in the Mozart piano concertos appeared in September 2016. The 10th instalment has just been released, including the first four concertos and the overture to the Latin comedy Apollo et Hyacinthus, all composed in Salzburg during the spring and summer of 1767, plus the overture to the one-act Singspiel Bastien und Bastienne, composed the following summer in Vienna. In the case of the concertos, the word ‘composed’ warrants qualification, since these are the four so-called ‘pastiche’ concertos, based on works by Mozart’s older contemporaries: Hermann Friedrich Raupach, Leontzi Honauer, Johann Gottfried Eckard, Johann Schobert and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.
The same qualities of hand-in-glove ensemble that distinguished previous releases in the series are found here. Bavouzet’s characteristic clarity is everywhere in evidence. He has chosen cadenzas by Yvonne Loriod, Murray Perahia and Vladimir Ashkenazy.
