This is big playing. Those who abhor prettified Mozart should derive much satisfaction from it. Mozart's miscellaneous keyboard works cannot be accommodated on a single record, but the choice of programme here shows many different facets of his genius and the ordering of items combines variety with an effective sense of progression.
The B minor Adagio, with both repeats, weighs in at a slightly improbable 16' 53'', but there is hardly any impression of flabbiness. The weight of the reading is supported by Barenboim's appreciation of the tonal (and therefore dramatic) direction. where it slightly misses out is in the kind of free-flowing legato which comes naturally to him in some of the eight early pieces at the end of the record; without that the unremitting intensity becomes rather stifling after a while. The A minor Rondo buckles more seriously under the weight. Barenboim is by no means alone in adopting a very steady six-in-a-bar pulse here; but if his basic quaver = 92 is within the bounds of feasibility (which I doubt) it needs an even finer control of texture to prevent profound regret from turning into a mere dirge.
The D major Rondo, a miniature masterpiece if ever there was one, shows Barenboim's structural awareness and strong fingerwork at their finest—tempting to see evidence of the conductor's long-range perception being applied here. Much of the D minor Fantasia is just as fine, although the final allegretto lacks the hearteasing warmth which justifies its curious appearance and its rhythmical unsteadiness is not really excused by the context of improvisatory fantasy. This piece also suffers from the one persistent blemish of the whole recital, namely serious over-pedalling in an already seriously over-resonant acoustic. This more than anything else qualifies what would otherwise be a warm welcome for these perceptive large-scale interpretations.'
