There are, I suppose, reasons for listening to Don Giovanni without the voices; though, short of cocktail party background music, I am hard put to it to think of many of them. These arrangements, the Viennese late eighteenth-century counterpart to ''Take a pair of sparkling eyes'' on a cornet from your local bandstand, were intended for times when you couldn't buy recordings and opera revivals were even scarcer than they are now. Well, these 20 numbers from the opera are presented here in very cheerful and lively performances, and the arrangements themselves are interesting in the way that Triebensee adapted vocal lines to the instruments, rounded off numbers that end inconveniently in their original context or cut ones he found excessively long, and so on. The instrumentation itself is ingenious, and the playing here is enthusiastic, musicianly, euphonious and individually skilful, and if not the last word in ensemble polish or refinement that is hardly the point in this context. The textures and timbres come over very clearly in what is a good, clean CD transfer.'
