You can, of course, buy CDs of Die Entfuhrung and Don Giovanni. I say that because the whole point of these arrangements was to make the music available to those who would not otherwise have access to it. It was common in Mozart's day to arrange an opera for wind band so that the Viennese of the 1780s could hear the latest successes at the court theatre in the streets or in the parks; this, or playing or singing it from a piano score, was the only way one could get to know the music. Nowadays there is not really much point in listening to Mozart operas without the voices unless one doesn't much like voices or is curious about how they did things in Mozart's time.
It is in fact entertaining to hear, if perhaps not too often, the kinds of sound the Viennese heard. These arrangements are for the standard Harmonie of pairs of oboes, clarinets, bassoons and horns, with (very advantageously) a double bassoon on the Don Giovanni disc. A special interest attaches, however, to the Entfuhrung one because there is some faint possibility that the arrangement is Mozart's own. We know, from a letter he wrote shortly after the premiere, that he wanted to make such an arrangement but was very pressed for time (otherwise, he said, someone else would get the money for doing it). Other versions do exist, by J. N. Went, and it has been generally supposed that Mozart never got around to the job or, if he did, that his text is lost. This new version was, however, found seven years ago, and the conductor here argues that it is a copy of Mozart's; but although it is some ways ingenious and felicitous, it has a number of decidedly un-Mozartian features—changes of harmony, crudities of form, a strange and quite unnecessary choice and sequence of keys, and flaws in the part-writing.
None of this, of course, need trouble the ordinary listener. I first played this disc while eating supper, and it is the kind of thing that makes agreeable Tafelmusik, as Don Giovanni of course knew. The Entfuhrung selection is extensive, including something from all but five of the numbers in the opera, most of them of course abbreviated and some of them heavily so. The vocal music is deftly shared out between first oboe and first clarinet, and occasionally bassoon; it is surprising how much of the original texture the arranger manages to incorporate, and sometimes it is wittily done. On the Don Giovanni disc the first bassoon, given additional scope by the presence of an extra, deeper bass instrument, has a larger share in the proceedings (it plays some of the violin scale passages in ''Taci, ingiusto core'' and half the mandolin music in the serenade, as well as the whole melody of ''Dalla sua pace''). But the arranging here, especially the cutting, is inevitably much more radical, because the individual numbers are longer in the first place, and many of them are quite seriously distorted by the excision, typically, of most of their middle sections and often their codas; further, in this opera the voices are missed even more acutely than in Die Entfuhrung because so much of the musical scheme is dictated by the words, without which many of the changes in mood and texture seem eccentric and meaningless. Both, really, are as much ''tunes from'' as transcriptions.
Still, these records do offer the kind of background music that you may want for 1991, the Mozart Year. Both are very decently played, pretty well tuned although they use period instruments, and on the whole the ensemble playing is good; the actual sound of the American Amadeus Winds in Die Entfuhrung is perhaps rather gentler and sweeter on the ear than that of the French players in Don Giovanni, though I find the bassoons slightly reticent. Both are well recorded; but the notes for Don Giovanni are ill-informed and inaccurate, and those for Die Entfuhrung pitch the claim for authenticity far too strongly.'
