The Genz brothers are among the most promising young singers around and this disc brings them happily together. Regrettably, Mozart wrote only two duets for tenor and baritone, both rather brief, and both are sung here. Their programme gives us other music from Così fan tutte, including that most testing of tenor arias, ‘Un’ aura amorosa’, which Christoph sings very smoothly and sweetly in the traditional manner of German lyric tenors, with a Schreier-like faint hint of nasality and very little vibrato, although a touch more of softness in the voice would sometimes have been welcome. He does indeed find some of that in the superb concert aria Misero! o sogno, and he gives a strong, large-scale reading of Per pietà, non ricercate.Stephan sings ‘Donne mie’, a delightfully light and shapely performance, with the refinement of a Lied singer, and he also does the Guglielmo aria that Mozart (sensibly) rejected, ‘Rivolgete a lui’, where he catches the jocular swagger, the sexual braggadocio, delightfully. He gives a duly impassioned account of Mentre ti lascio, even if the bottom of his voice in this rather low-lying aria isn’t as powerful as the top. Don Giovanni’s Serenade is admirable too but a touch more of soft sensuality, of covered tone, might have served. Here the voice is well forward, but for most of the disc the orchestra is unusually prominent and the rich detail of Mozart’s scoring comes through very clearly, aided by the period instruments and Sigiswald Kuijken’s sensitive and alert direction.
