Jacques Moderne was not a composer, but one of the most successful and influential music printers of the sixteenth century. He established himself in Lyons in 1523, and began publishing a few years later. Over the next 30 years, at least 60 publications appeared under his imprint, covering all the musical genres of the period, both sacred and secular. This recording concentrates on the latter, particularly the chanson and instrumental dance music. We have here some of the century’s most famous tunes, including the song by Pierre Sandrin whose name the Ensemble Doulce Memoire have taken as their own.
This recording differs from those of other ensembles in its greater emphasis on instrumental participation, using wind instruments (the so-called haulte musique or musica alta) and percussion. The dance pieces are often based on songs that achieved real popularity, such as the Pavane on Janequin’s La bataille. It is easy to appreciate the commercial motivation for such re-workings, and to admire the skill with which they have been carried out. That skill extends to the performances themselves, whether sung or played (there is a delightfully reedy-sounding doucaine on track 19). It should be noted that the two are kept largely separate, with the exception of the rollicking finale, En revenant de Lyon. The only possible quibble might be that pavans and galliards are also kept separate, whereas these two contrasted dances were intended to follow one another.
Nevertheless, a warm welcome for this addition (with a refreshing slant) to a repertory that is increasingly well served. Finally, I note that the text ofElle est d’andouille friande (“She is partial to a nice sausage”) is not provided. Could this be censorship? I hope not.'
